Major Medical Technology | Sydney West Area Health Service

Medical technology needs were identified in a feasibility plan prepared for Sydney West Area Health Service. The investment represented Stage 1 of the redevelopment of Westmead and Auburn Hospitals over the period to 2008.

Major medical technology needs identified in the feasibility plan were:

  • an upgrade of the pneumatic tube system at Westmead Hospital

  • imaging equipment, including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) equipment

  • cardiology equipment – echocardiographic ultrasounds and cardiac catheter laboratory equipment

  • a positron emission tomography (PET) scanner

  • an Area-wide instrument tracking system for sterile instruments

  • a picture archive and communication system (PACS) to distributed stored radiographic images.

The business case provided:

  • process outlines for investments in new surgical equipment and pathology technology, as well as replacements of existing medical equipment

  • detailed justifications for proposed new major medical technology including appraisal of options for each type of equipment, details of their proposed implementation, acquisition timing, and funding arrangements.
