Campus 2010 Program The University of Sydney

Campus 2010 is part of an $800 million, 20-year commitment to renew, rebuild and enhance the University of Sydney's campuses.  The Campus 2010 Program worth $250 million, was the largest single capital development program yet undertaken at the University.

Capital Insight implemented an international design competition for the selection of various design teams for major components of the program, with the competition process widely applauded as a template for future international competitions both in Australia and overseas.

Capital Insight was initially appointed to prepare the Project Definition Plan for the Campus 2010 Program and, subsequent to approval of the program by the University, as Project Director and Project Managers for the design and implementation phases.

Capital Insight was the Project Director and Project Manager for the program which consists of five individual projects:

  • Faculty of Lawa new 18,250 square metre building to accommodate the faculty's academic and administrative staff over four levels, together with a range of research centre's, institutes, general teaching spaces, meeting rooms, conference rooms and underground parking. Major components of the development included a Moot Court facility, law library, auditoriums, lecture theatres, teaching spaces, cafes and a public forecourt

  • Jane Foss Russell Building – a new centralised student services building comprising a combined science and technology and library and an outdoor plaza located in the centre of the university campus as well as the provision of new retail and food outlets

  • School of Information Technologies  a new five level complex with a gross floor area of approximately 9,000 square metres, comprising specialised teaching and research laboratories to house postgraduate programs and key research centres. The building also features energy saving initiatives to achieve an energy efficiency rating of 4.5 ABGR

  • School of Geosciences - refurbishment and upgrade of research and laboratory facilities in the heritage listed Madsen Building

  • Camperdown and Darlington Public Domainsan integrated program of works across the Camperdown and Darlington campuses to remove vehicular traffic, improve pedestrian access (including a new footbridge across City Road) and an increase open space providing new look landscaping, paving, signage and lighting.

Key challenges in the implementation involved the continuity of services and acceptable standards of teaching and student facilities, with significant planning being undertaken to ensure success.
