Redfern Community Health Centre | Sydney South West AHS

Capital Insight is Project Manager for the new $10 million Redfern Community Health Centre.  The project involves the demolition of the former Redfern Police Station and adaptive reuse of the former Redfern Courthouse building with the construction of a new three-storey building to the rear, with one level of basement car parking.

Constructed in 1898, the Redfern Courthouse was designed by the first NSW Government Architect Walter Liberty Vernon and is a heritage listed building.  Prior to the Courthouse erection, the site was owned by James Squire Farnell, Grandson of the first Australian Brewer, James Squire, and the first Australian born Premier and Secretary of Lands for the colony of New South Wales.

Following demolition of the police station building, Capital Insight carried out various archaeological investigations for both indigenous artefacts and items of European historical significance given the nature of the former occupants.

This project involved a high level of community and aboriginal participation in the initial planning stages and in the construction of the project, which exceeded its targets for aboriginal participation during the construction phase.
