Auburn Health Service Redevelopment Health Infrastructure and Sydney West AHS

Capital Insight was Project Director Procurement for the new $145 million Auburn Hospital which commenced operations in May 2009.  The new hospital replaced the existing hospital building, which was commissioned in 1964 and was no longer suitable for the delivery of modern health services.  Construction of the new hospital first required provision of temporary facilities to accommodate decanting of a number of existing health services and extensive demolition on the southern part of the site in close proximity to the existing and operating main hospital building.

The new hospital is provided with a capacity of 184 beds, 6 operating theatres,  a 24 hour emergency department supporting a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services.  A new Community Health facility is now being constructed on the site as a second stage works.  Provisions are included in the new Auburn Hospital to share services with a future planned relocation of St Joseph’s hospital (to be collocated) on the site.  This collation will provide acute, sub-acute and non-acute inpatient, ambulatory and outpatient health services on one site, facilitating greater continuity of patient care.

As Project Director Procurement, Capital Insight was responsible for:

  • providing the primary leadership and facilitation needed to secure the delivery of health facilities within scope, budget and time

  • ensuring the performance of the design consultants and the contractor, through to project commissioning and acceptance by the hospital and Area Health Service

  • ensuring adequate risk management, project performance monitoring and verification audit services

  • ensuring NSW Government procurement protocols are applied.

Key features and initiatives developed for the project included:

  • major demolition and construction in very close proximity to the existing operational hospital

  • implementation of an innovative design and construction tender process

  • inclusion of most FFE in the main contract scope, including major medical equipment

  • inclusion of all relocation from the old to the new hospital in the main contract scope

  • completion ahead of program, within budget with a high quality of finish.
