Darlington Public Domain | The University of Sydney

Capital Insight was Project Director and Project Manager redevelopment of the University of Sydney's Camperdown and Darlington Public Domain Projects as part of the overall Campus 2010+ Building for the Future Program, for which Capital Insight was also Project Director and Project Manager. The primary objective of the development was to provide equal and equitable access for all pedestrians to travel from the Shepherd Street entrance to the new Jane Foss Russell Building.

The development has transformed the image and identity of the University at a key entry point to the University (with over 20,000 entries per day) and has successfully integrated a bio-retention water garden and lawn, incorporated a bridge to carry the main pedestrian access from the City Campus and resolved access and public safety issues.

Environmental and sustainability engineering was incorporated by developing a water harvesting strategy that treats storm water run-off from Darlington.  This water passes through the bio-retention system and is then stored in three underground tanks of approximately 240.000 litres.  Excess water from the treatment system continues on to Blackwattle Bay.  The garden areas have been designed to assist in the education of taxonomy, using local Sydney flora and supports the education program of the University and the urban ecology of the local region.
